The spirit of La Llotja

If we had to describe what gives us the energy to carry out our daily tasks, the best word would probably be excitement. Excitement for innovating, giving each event a different form, a personal touch, providing a unique solution, always aiming towards excellence. A passion we have for doing small and big things with as much efficiency as possible, in harmony with everyone and with the utmost respect and good humour.

Architecture and sustainability

When Ángel Ros, the Mayor of Lleida, and his team chose the prestigious Dutch design studio Mecanoo, to create La Llotja, one of the reasons was to share a vision of "a sustainability that goes beyond the use of solar panels, heat pumps and a green ceiling. Buildings must be carefully integrated with the urban context that surrounds them. Sustainability is also related to the duration throughout time, the identity, the rich morphology, the materialisation and how we experiment with the space. The buildings must inspire their users to be more social y ecologically responsible.

Mecanno's design, faithful to this concept, interprets Lleida's scenery, guaranteeing continuity between the river and the mountainous areas of the province, also the wide cantilevers protect people from the sun and the rain. The garden terrace, the automatically controlled light that enters through the large windows play an important role throughout the year in the sense of comfort of the Congress Centre's users.

Accessibility

The entire building has been designed with functionality and accessibility in mind. Allowing disabled people to enter into every room and area, by means of wide corridors and large lifts. Optimising light and acoustics to maximise a sense of wellbeing. Creating a functional space, which will facilitate logistics, allow for an optimal use of the facilities and rationalise the movements within the building.

Mecanoo

Francine M.J. Houben founded Mecanoo in Delft, in 1984. Today the studio employs 90 creative professionals from 16 countries. Houses, hotels and skyscrapers, cities and polders, schools, theatres, libraries and museums, each design takes into consideration the cultural surrounding, the location and the period. Each project is treated as if it were a unique design. Since the beginning, their projects have received awards on more than 50 occasions.
